About Our Work
The FACE Mission
Funding African Children's Education, Inc. (FACE) is a nonprofit organization with a mission to award secondary school scholarships to orphaned and needy African students so that they will have the opportunity to become self-sufficient adults and contributing members of their community and country.
History of the Organization
In May of 2005, Ann Looby, who now serves as president of FACE, received a Humanitarian Alumni Award from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Attached to that award was a $15,000 fellowship split between two students working on their doctorates. These two students had done some humanitarian work and showed a high potential for continuing with humanitarian causes upon completion of their degrees.
One of the recipients was Pius Nyutu, a graduate student originally from Kenya, Africa. Ann and Pius, who is now vice president of FACE, began to talk about their mutual desire to help African children who would like to continue with their education but lack the necessary funding.
In July 2005, Ann met Pius in Kenya with the plan of developing a 501(c)3 organization to provide scholarships for needy secondary students. They visited numerous schools in and around the Nairobi area in order to find out how many students entering or in high school needed financial assistance. They talked to the administrators of schools and were able to get the names of the needy or orphaned students who desired financial help.
The Scholarship Process
Students who are interested in a scholarship are asked to write an essay about their life, their desire to continue their education and what they want to do in the future. Their administrators then write a letter of support detailing the need of the students as well as their educational potential.
Board of Directors
The first Board of Directors meeting of FACE was held on November 15, 2005.
