School Presentation & Fundraising With Art
May 27, 2007
First School Presentation
The FACE president and two home-school students, Meghan and Mariel Kelley, gave the first fundraising presentation at Monforton School in Bozeman, Montana.
This presentation was developed in line with the philosophy of the FACE board — the younger children get involved with donating to organizations that are helping needy children, the more likely they will give when they are older and more able to help the less fortunate in the world.
The presentation was very successful, and we raised $124.62 from the fourth and fifth classes at this small rural school.
Portraits of African Children
Another fundraising project that is now being used by FACE to generate money for scholarships are the cards we made with donated pastel portraits of African children.
Marie Antoinette Kelley and her two daughters, Meghan (12 yers old) and Mariel (10 years old), are the artists who donated the pastel portraits.
FACE has made these into cards that are selling for $2.50 each.
President’s Note: Latest Trip to Africa
Dec. 10, 2006
I am back from Africa, and I had a splendid and productive trip, which included visiting Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania.
I was able to visit eight out of the nine schools where FACE sponsored students in 2006.
The FACE Board of Directors had decided before I left for Africa that we would roll over all the 2006 scholarships and that I would give the 2007 FACE checks to the students when I was there.
It was truly a delight to meet with each FACE scholarship recipient and to give them and their principals the check for 2007.
Then there were new schools and new applicants. How can we help all those students?
We continue to get donations, but we are not keeping up with the demand, so the FACE Board continues to come up with new fundraising ideas to try to meet the need.
Here is a look at some of our 2006 FACE scholarship recipients:
- One girl is number 1 in her class.
- One girl was number 2 last term and overall 4th in the class for the year.
- One is number 5 in her class.
- Five principals said that their students had improved greatly since they no longer worried about who was going to pay their school fees or were not sent away for non-payment of fees.
- One is the class leader, chosen by her teachers for her diligence and hard work.
- One is doing outstanding in sports and keeping up with her school work.

Dr. Ann Looby Travels to Africa in October
Oct. 2, 2006
FACE President, Dr. Ann Looby, will be making another trip to Africa, thanks to a generous gift of frequent flyer miles donated to her by a friend. She will leave October 24th and return November 8th.
Ann is scheduled to visit orphanages and schools in Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya, with a possible visit to Sudan if the State Department lifts the travel advisory.
A BIG thank-you to all the donors who will make it possible for Ann to give checks to students we sponsored last year for another year of high school education.
Ann hopes to get a lot of pictures to share with you on the photo gallery and to update our PowerPoint presentation. To say nothing of her excitement of seeing each of the smiling FACEs of the students we have been able to help through your generous support last year and this year.
September Board Meeting
Oct. 2, 2006
The fourth FACE Board of Directors meeting took place on September 8, 2006.
- Sudan was added to the list of countries in Africa that FACE will serve. A hold was put on Liberia, Madagascar and Namibia for lack of a contact person in those countries.
- We approved a FACE stamp to use for the FACE fund.
- We also approved the steps made toward the PowerPoint Presentation for schools in the USA.
Board Meeting Update
May 24, 2006
On May 11th, the FACE Board approved the outline for the PowerPoint presentation for fundraising in the schools. They also approved the making of cards to sell with pastel drawings of the African children that a portrait artist wants to donate to FACE for purposes of fundraising. The cards and ink to print them have been donated through a fellowship given by the University of Missouri to help with FACE administrative costs.
The board would love to have your suggestions for any fundraising projects that the public might like to suggest. Email us at facefund [at] gmail.com.
New Scholarship Countries and More
May 12, 2006
Updates from Ann Looby, FACE president:
- FACE is still in its first year of existence, and it has sent 11 scholarships to orphaned and needy high school students in Kenya. Each scholarship varies from about $400 to $500. This pays for the student’s education, room and board, books, and uniforms. We still have a number of qualified applicants but not enough funds.
- FACE held its second Board Meeting on February 28, 2006. During that meeting the FACE logo, stationery, and donation brochure were approved. Also the 2007 application was designed and approved in order to screen the applicants on various criteria.
- We are expanding our scholarship program to other countries in Africa. Recently, we made a contact in Namibia through a Harvard Teacher Core Volunteer. We expect to receive completed applications from a number of students for next year.
- FACE has also made contacts with various individuals in orphanage schools in Rwanda, Liberia, Tanzania, and Madagascar. Hopefully, FACE will be able to send scholarships to orphans in all these countries soon, so that qualified students will be able to continue their education.
- Fundraising is our next big challenge. The President of FACE is working with 4 home schooled students in Montana that have a desire to help FACE raise money. This group of students is in the process of making a Power Point Presentation to take to American Public Schools in hopes of getting a group donated scholarship of $500 from each school where they make the presentation. The FACE Board members believe that the younger people start donating to worthy causes the more it will become part of their way of giving as they reach adulthood.
- Tune in again...as we have more ideas coming forward weekly. Or email us at facefund@gmail.com if you have any suggestions or comments.
